The rise was fast. Bayern won the DFB-Pokal in 1966 and 1967 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1967, then their first Bundesliga title in 1969 under Branko Zebec. Udo Lattek took over in 1970 and built the team that won three straight league titles from 1972 to 1974, scoring 101 goals in 1971-72 — the first time any Bundesliga side passed a hundred.
Then came Europe. The 1974 final against Atlético Madrid went to a replay after Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck equalised from distance in the last seconds of extra time; Bayern won the replay 4–0 with two goals each from Gerd Müller and Uli Hoeneß. Leeds United were beaten 2–0 in 1975 and Saint-Étienne 1–0 in 1976. Adding the 1976 Intercontinental Cup, Bayern were the best team in the world, and the core of the side — Beckenbauer, Müller, Maier, Breitner, Hoeneß — was also the core of West Germany's 1974 World Cup winners.
The break-up was equally quick. Beckenbauer left for New York in 1977, Müller followed in 1979, and Maier's career ended after a car accident in 1979. The club would not win the European Cup again for 25 years.
